My mom and my daughter ... For my 50th birthday, my family -- my two sisters and our children -- gathered at Redwood National and State Parks with my Mom, a flashback to a trip we had made as kids 40 years earlier. We didn't know at the time it would be my mom's last trip with us. She was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma in February 2012 and died in June -- making this photo all the more special. It's of a typical moment, her exploring nature with a grandkid (my 10-year-old daughter, Mia).
