For a wild mustang stallion, the most powerful instinct is to win a band of females and father the next generation of young wild horses. Since virtually all breeding age mares will already belong to another stallion, an up-and-coming male must challenge, fight and defeat the dominant male to get a female. The challenger must win convincingly over the herd male to be successful.
