Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. The West Pond in July 2011. The Manhattan skyline is a ghostly image in the background. When I was at the wildlife refuge I felt like I in an oasis. It was amazing to think that the city is a short distance away. There are over 200 species of birds that pass through there. Hurricane Sandy has created a breach at least 50 feet across in the West Pond drawing in the brackish water from Jamaica Bay. One has to wonder how the ecosystem of the pond will change.
