The American black bear is the fourth largest of the world’s eight bear species. Adult males can weigh between 175 and 500 pounds (78-225 kg), but average 250-300 pounds (112-135 kg) in the fall. Females range between 100 and 300 pounds (45-135 kg) and average 175 pounds (78 kg). They generally stand two to three feet (60-91 cm) tall at the shoulders standing on all fours, and five feet (152 cm) tall when standing upright.
