Male and female mountain goats are almost identical in appearance and both sexes possess a pair of black horns and a shaggy bit of hair which hangs down from their chin – a goatee! In order to avoid the threat of predators such as wolves, bears and wolverines mountain goats cling to the windswept realm above the treeline. Wind action keeps ridges free of snow providing browse, while subjecting the goats to winter lows of -50F and hurricane force winds. The climb to get this shot was worth it!
