During a lengthy hibernation female grizzlies give birth to 1 lb cubs. Unlike the black bear, which inhabits forests and flee in the presence of danger, the grizzly evolved in open habitats. As a result, the female stands her ground or attacks perceived threats with a ferocity that has earned her species a reputation as a monster. Despite this zealous protection of her young, only about half of all cubs will survive to adult hood. This mother, therefore, has done a fine job raising these cubs!
