On a day when the lava wasn't supposed to flow near the surface, we wandered out to the edge of the safety ropes and I set up my camera to take some photos of the smoke from the ocean flow in the distance. After twenty minutes or so, suddenly, only five feet away from where I stood, surface lava started oozing out. We got a private show from Pele and I couldn't be more grateful.
