After the Battle of the Little Bighorn (colloquially known as Custer's Last Stand), the bodies of Custer and his fallen men and horses were buried on site in a mass grave. Although some (including Custer himself) were later reinterred and buried elsewhere, the majority remain here on site, commemorated by this this Memorial, which bears their names, as well as smaller headstones marking the locations where they fell.
