I was walking without a plan, just following the trail until it opened onto the Davidson River in Pisgah National Forest. The scene was simple: filtered sun through tall trees, and water sliding past with a soft, persistent force. I raised my camera to make what I assumed would be an unremarkable record of the place. Then a lone fisherman stepped into the frame, searching the current with the calm focus of someone who could stand there all day. I spoke to him briefly and asked if he minded being included; he agreed without much concern and continued on, intent on trout I never saw. His presence changed everything—turning an ordinary river view into a quiet meditation on attention, patience, and being alone in nature without feeling lonely.
