In August of this year, we drove all through this beautiful National Preserve, which encompasses the crater of a dormant volcano. We first stopped at the visitor center to get the history of the area, and learned that this volcano’s ash covered most of North America when it erupted. The preserve was gorgeous, with autumn just beginning to color the landscape. Wildlife was abundant as well. We saw many coyotes, elk, prairie dogs and even a badger.
