This Aerial view of Harpers Ferry was taken from the top of the Maryland Heights Cliffs. These 300 foot vertical cliff is the highest spot overlooking Harpers Ferry was vital in the protection and possession of this historic town. From this spot, you can also see the Potomac, the B & O railroad, and the C & O Canal. The remnants of civil war fortifications and encampments on the trail to the summit emphasize the historical significance of the batlles that took place here. In fact, it was the first battle between the Union & Confederate troops in Maryland and was important in Lee's capture of the Union troops and the recapturing of the area several days afterward.
