The Woodend Nature Sanctuary in Chevy Chase Md. is a part of the NPS sponsored Chesapeake Gateways program that highlights places of cultural, historical, or ecological significance in regards to the Chesapeake. The sanctuary has a preserved mixed hardwood climax forest typical of that the colonists encountered when they arrived in the area. The park also has restored forest meadows. This photo shows an amphitheater set among the forest from which one can appreciate the size and height of the trees the forest contains.
