As we were hiking upstream along the cascading Kings Creek, our son pointed out these Woolly Bear caterpillars on the foliage close to the ground. If it weren't for our son's attention to details in nature settings, keen eyesight, and love of etymology, we would never have noticed them! These Woolly Bears have unusually long and pronounced white spines, which leads me to think that Lassen's harsher environment requires them to bear extra spiky armor against would-be predators!(?)
