Chesapeake Gateways is an NPS program that sponsors properties that highlight historical or cultural/environmental aspects of the Chesapeake Bay region. This photo was taken at Woodend Nature Preserve just outside of D.C. The nature preserve has acres of climax forest typical of the type of forest the early European settlers encountered in the Chesapeake area. It has preserved the woodland acreage and also restored a streambed and meadows to an approximation of what they once were. The photo shows a wonderful very old black walnut tree on the property.
