I feel very fortunate to capture this dramatic photograph of a spectacular weather phenomenon in Cades Cove, where a heavy curtain of rain is falling between the layered mountain ridges of the Great Smoky Mountains. The contrast is striking - while the foreground meadows and trees are bathed in soft light under partly cloudy skies, a dense column of precipitation creates an almost mystical gray veil in the distant valley between the blue-green mountain slopes. This scene perfectly demonstrates the dynamic and ever-changing weather patterns that give the Smokies their famous misty character, showing how localized storms can create these breathtaking displays of nature's power against the serene pastoral landscape of the cove.
