When we first encountered Old Boar, (a Coastal Brown Bear), I expected the guide to stop to let us get pictures, but instead, he drove the cart we were riding in past the bear and beyond some huge boulders. He said that the bear would come through these stones, and we should be able to get a great shot. And he did. Nothing is staged and no food is given to the bears. The guides have just been there long enough to know the bears' habits and use their knowledge to help us to photograph wildlife in a way that we could never have done on our own.
