The Brooks Range was formed 110 million yrs. ago when the North American tetonic plate collided with the Pacific plate. Since then, it has been shaped by glacial erosion to what we see today. Flying over this part of the range, which I'm hoping was in or on the outskirts of Gates of the Arctic, while listening to an experienced and knowledgeable pilot telling about the terrain, was very interesting.
