Following their re-introduction to GSMNP in 2001, the elk have been thriving and have spread throughout the park and surrounding areas of Western North Carolina. Throughout the year, the herd makes daily visits to the visitor center just outside of Cherokee, NC. A long lens is essential to capture images of elk behavior without being close enough to alter that behavior. I was very excited to see this cow cleaning it's calf.
