In the fall of 2023, my family took a cross-country trip from New Jersey to California and back. Along the way we stopped at National Parks, National Monuments and National Historical Parks. Our visit to Pecos National Historic Park on the historic Santa Fe trail in northern New Mexico gave us the unique experience of closely exploring the pueblo, church and convento at the park which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Ongoing preservation efforts at the site include making adobe bricks to preserve the mission church which dates back to the 1700s. Visitors can also climb down into a kiva, a subterranean pit house used for religious and ceremonial purposes.
