California Coastal National Monument

It's not well known that the entire California coastline is a National Monument. It means that any rock outcroppings, islands, and reefs within 10 nautical miles of shore are a part of the monument. One outcropping not far from my home is always full of pelicans and other sea birds. On this particular day this pelican was hit just right by a small shaft of sun during sunset, bathing him in a wonderful warm light. He was looking at me curiously while I snapped photos of him. I knew he wanted me to be done when he started ruffling his feathers though!
