This kaleidoscope of colors splashed across these rainbow hills is caused by oxidation of different metals. Iron compounds give off the pink, red, and yellow, manganese makes purple, and mica produces green. Located in Death Valley National Park, the color palette becomes especially vivid in diffused post-sunset light.
