The new ecolodge at Flamingo (replacing the lodge destroyed by Hurricane Wilma in 2005) had been open for only a month when we checked in. Although its skeleton is made up of shipping containers the interior was roomy, comfortable, and sleek. It is elevated on stilts to help prevent further storm damage. All rooms have a balcony facing mostly Florida Bay. This dramatic sunset photo was taken from the balcony - the night lighting of the parking spaces underneath made for a striking photo.
