I thought a portrait, or vertical, photo would do this scene justice. This is the amazing Palm Canyon, a narrow canyon in the Kofa Mountains that palm trees are able to grow. Palm trees don't really grow anywhere else around Kofa, but this canyon faces south so the sun hits it directly, making a good climate for the palms. The narrowness of the rock walls protects the trees from strong winds and act as a heat amplifier so the palms thrive in between the narrow canyon. We hiked up to the viewpoint along the trail at almost the perfect time, late afternoon when the sun was hitting the canyon full blast. It must have been close to 100 degrees Fahrenheit up there!
