Skinny as a rail. The origin of the common name for rails becomes apparent when they are viewed head on. They are laterally compressed and that allows them to more easily move among the stalks of cordgrass in their salt marsh habitat. I lay down in the mud so as to get this eye-level perspective of this clapper rail foraging for invertebrates and fish.
