2600 feet below the edge of the rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison, the Gunnison River is a great place for a picnic! In 2022, low water levels and rising temperatures allowed for blue-green algae blooms, contributing to the unusual hue of the water. To access, drive the steep East Portal Road along 6 miles of hairpin curves to the bottom of the canyon. The road down to the river is just part of the fun!
