Cannonball concretions found in Theodore Roosevelt National Park's North Unit add an element of discovery and whimsy to a hike near the North Unit Scenic Drive. When water seeps from a butte above, minerals are deposited in spaces in the sediments. A glue forms around a core. When more layers are deposited, the concretion builds outward to form a sphere.
