This is the Mora River, as seen from the Juniper Trail on Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge. The Mora River is important to many species, especially as water is a coveted resource in New Mexico. The river is also an important piece of history, from the Santa Fe Trail to Fort Union and to homesteads like Loma Parda.

It is in danger this year because of the devastating fires that hit the area hard, nearly 300,000 acres were burned and many lost their homes and lives.
