This adult bison had just gotten up from a long rest and gave me the perfect moment to capture- one I had been waiting on! In the background, you can faintly see a bison calf which are also called "red dogs" for their coloring when they are young.
The bison herd on Rio Mora National Wildlife Refuge are used for grassland management because of their unique grazing ability. All bison on the Refuge are managed by the Pueblo of Pojoaque.
