The St Marks Lighthouse on the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. A lighthouse that was originally built in 1831, and moved/rebuilt in 1842 to protect against erosion, has existed in some form for almost 200 years along the north coast of the Apalachee Bay. After being rebuilt in 1842, it has since survived many tropical storms and hurricanes and it also survived the Civil War after retreating Confederate forces attempted to destroy the tower as Union forces approached from the Apalachee Bay. While it was rebuilt after the conclusion of the Civil War due to damage from retreating Confederate forces, it never did fall.

Refuge gates are closed at night, but at certain times of the year the gates open to allow access just before morning twilight touches the landscape. It's these times of the year where there only exists a few opportunities to capture the Milky Way with the historic St. Marks Lighthouse on the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and that's what I attempted to do with this photo.
