The Ballard Locks was home to over 40 Great Blue Heron nests in 2023. During the hour or two before sunset, the parents were actively on the lookout for food for their hungry chicks. I had just walked over the locks to the south side where this particular heron was overlooking the water. It suddenly took off in flight and I swung my camera to catch it in flight hoping I got it at the right moment as I was using my manual focus lens. Luckily I got this photo soon after it took off with the flight perfectly in focus.
