The historic entrance for Carlsbad Caverns is framed by an amphitheater for ranger presentations and observation of the evening emergence of the Brazilian free-tailed bats. The cliff behind the entrance is draped with abundant cacti. We were there to see the bats emerge but on this particular day the numbers exiting the cave were rather meager, unlike the 5-10 minute black vortex I remember from a visit in September of 1992.
