Talk about a close encounter. Devil's Tower National Monument, in eastern Wyoming, is one of the most recognizable (but least visited!) American landmarks. You can see it from miles away, but getting up close and personal really puts this spot into perspective. It was featured in the iconic film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind. If you're ever in the area, it's a great place to stop and be friendly!
