During our first full day in this park, we drove the 28-mile park road starting at the north end near the Painted Desert. We stopped at all of the viewpoints and when we reached the Blue Mesa area, we took a hike down into and among the beautiful bentonite clay badlands. This was also the first area of the park where we started to see petrified logs. This photo captures a huge log in the foreground; one of our early encounters with these amazing natural wonders.
