Monument to the 400 African American soldiers who served at Fort Selden in New Mexico between 1866 - 1891. Native Americans on the western frontier nicknamed these troop units “Buffalo Soldiers” because of the soldiers’ short hair and courage, which they found similar to the much admired buffalo.
