The trail up to Grinnell Glacier starts with a short trek through cool coniferous shadow, bursting suddenly onto the white sand shores of Swiftcurrent Lake. Nearly 5,000 feet above sea level and a stunning turquoise color, the lake in October is fringed with brilliant gold foliage and dappled with strong, soft sun. The air is crisp, the light warm, and the only sound aside from the amorous flutters of banded-winged grasshoppers is the crunch of gravel beneath our feet.
