It is the impromptu detour that is often the most memorable. The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve was not part of our road trip itinerary last Thanksgiving break. Our boys were little when we last ventured to the dunes several years ago. As we approached Alamosa, we realized we were not that far from the tallest dunes in North America. We decided to take the detour and visit some sand. It was a short, cold, blustery visit to this stunning landscape, and most definitely memorable.
