Despite the violence that occurred here so many years ago, the preserved battlefield is surprisingly pastoral with abundant woods and fields. The fields are abloom in wildflowers, particularly in early summer and the fall. This is a beautiful thistle that was blooming at the time of my visit - seven skipper butterflies are present on the flowerhead.
