"The Orphaned Siblings"
On my way out of the Shiawassee Wildlife Auto Drive during a June 2022 visit, I noticed movement at the side of the road. I looked down into the gully, and to my surprise, saw a group of 14 precious wood duck hatchlings in a small puddle, with the mama nowhere in sight. I watched and photographed them for several minutes, and the group seemed confused about which direction to go, and for a few moments, split in two directions before regrouping and then as fast as their little legs could paddle, put some distance between themselves and my camera. This particular image stood out to me as four of the ducklings raised themselves above the group, appearing to take charge of their family.
