At the foot of Golden Gate Bridge is the third installment of Fort Point Light (1864-present). It was deactivated in 1934 when Golden Gate Bridge was completed (a new signal was installed at the base of the South Tower of Golden Gate Bridge).
Fort Point itself was built in Civil War era between 1853 to 1861 by U.S. Army Engineers for the purpose of defending San Francisco Bay.
