"Flowering"
The Haleakala Silversword (Argyroxiphium sandwicense subsp. macrocephalum), called "'Ahinahina" in Hawaiian, can live many years but blooms only once it its lifetime. At that time, for reasons not fully understood, the silvery central bush sends up a long flowering head which bursts into bloom, then fades as the entire plant withers after pollination. These amazing plants grow nowhere else in the world besides Haleakala National Park.
