We spotted this three mast ship as we were driving toward US 101 in north San Francisco. Alcatraz, the other ships and shore building make a interesting background. The sailing ship's colors help set it off. The winds were extremely strong as evidenced by the white caps and green color of the water. Fog had settled in over the land in the background.
The three mast ship is the BALCLUTHA which is part of San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park. The ship is a 300 foot, steel hulled, square rigged vessel that was launched in 1886.
Surrounding the ship are:
The Eppelton Hall - a 100 foot steel hulled tug built in 1916 - the hull is green and black. Its two paddle wheels are white.
The Hercules - a 151 foot rivited steel tug built in 1907 - the red stack and cabin are visible behind the bow of the BALCLUTHA
The C. A. Thayer - 156 foot three mast schooner built in 1895 - the black hull to the right of the BALCLUTHA with a white tent over the deck
Alma - 59 foot wood Schooner built in 1891- its two masts are visible near at the BALCLUTHA's stern
Eureka -300 foot wood side paddlewheel ferry built in 1890 - is the large white vessel with a black stack in from of the BALCLUTHA
